Drilling Borings

Borings come in two main varieties, large-diameter and small-diameter. Large-diameter borings are rarely used due to safety concerns and expense, but are sometimes used to allow a geologist or engineer to visually and manually examine the soil and rock stratigraphy in-situ. Small-diameter borings are frequently used to allow a geologist or engineer examine soil or rock cuttings or to retrieve samples at depth using soil samplers, and to perform in-place soil tests.

The Electric Resistivity Method

Measured as VES (1-D) and profiles (2-D and 3-D). It can provide Information regarding thickness and extent of permeable zones, depth to Impermeable clay zones, extent of gravel deposits, thickness of fill materials/ debris and delineation of shear zones and fault features. This Method can be used for

  • Groundwater migration/contamination studies
  • Quarry evaluations

Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR)

Measured as profiles (2-D and 3-D). GPR surveys can be used to locate and determine the depth or approximate dimensions of:

  • Underground storage tanks
  • Burled debris
  • Reinforcement in concrete
  • Voids and cavities
  • Finer trenches and excavations
  • Archeological and historical remains
  • Shallow sediment and bedrock horizons
